An 18-year-old woman is on life support and has been declared brain dead after being shot by a school safety officer outside a high school in Long Beach, California.
Authorities told Los Angeles Times the woman, identified as Mona Rodriguez, had had an altercation with a 15-year-old girl just outside campus when a public safety officer from the Long Beach Unified School District came in to intervene and Rodriguez left to ride in a car.
Video taken by a passer-by that has gone viral on social media shows Rodriguez in a gray car as the officer walks up and begins to take off. The unidentified officer is then seen shooting the car twice as she tries to pull away.
Rodriguez, who has a 5 month old son, was shot in the head. Her family said she shouldn’t survive.
“I just want justice for my daughter, my little mother, my love of my life who I will never be able to find again,” said her boyfriend, Rafeul Chowdhury. CBS LA. “I don’t know what to do with my 5 month old son.”
The officer, who remains unidentified, has been placed on paid leave while the Long Beach Police Department and the district attorney investigate.
“For this officer to pick on the car and start shooting inside the car was totally against politics, training and common sense,” said Luis Carrillo, a lawyer representing the family of Rodriguez. the Guardian.
The Long Beach Police Department will not comment on the ongoing investigation.
