A retiree still on life support weeks after an assault at his home

An elderly man remains on life support for weeks after being attacked in his home, Gardai said.

Detectives are carrying out a number of searches at Skreen in County Sligo as they investigate the assault on Tom Niland which took place on January 18.

Three masked men forced their way into a house in Doonflynn on the N59 and assaulted Mr Niland, leaving him seriously injured in the head and upper body.

Superintendent Mandy Gaynor said: ‘Tom remains in critical condition and on life support at Sligo University Hospital.

“A Garda Family Liaison Officer continues to support his family at this time through their ordeal.

“Gardai are carrying out a number of searches along the N59 between Doonflynn, Dromore West and along the road to Lough Easkey.

“Important evidence related to this crime has already been recovered along this route.

“Today’s searches are aimed at identifying and recovering any other material of evidentiary value to this investigation.”

The officer added: “I am using all the resources at my disposal in this investigation.

“Today’s search involves the Sligo Divisional Search Team, Garda Mounted Unit, Garda Canine Unit, Garda Water Unit, Garda Air Support, Civil Defense community and community volunteers.

“I am overwhelmed by the significant level of community support and information received by the investigation team at Sligo Garda Station.

“I am determined that the criminals who committed this crime are brought to justice and my investigative team is working tirelessly to ensure that happens.

“I am very aware that this horrific crime against an elderly man has sparked huge debate, generated conversations and struck fear in the local community here in Skreen and indeed across the country.
