What happened in Hillsborough?
The Hillsborough disaster was a fatal human crush that took place during an FA Cup football match at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield on April 15, 1989 and resulted in the deaths of 97 people.
The game was between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, and the crash occurred in an area reserved for Liverpool supporters.
In an infamous article published by The sun Four days after the event, supporters of the Liverpool club were falsely blamed for the incident and were also accused of picking up “pockets of victims” and urinating on cops.

Kelvin MacKenzie, who was the newspaper’s editor at the time, later apologized for the article and blamed “deliberate disinformation of the South Yorkshire Police “.
Anne Williams campaigned for the 97 victims
The first coroner’s inquests in 1991 ruled on all deaths accidental – findings rejected by the families of the victims.
In 2009, an independent Hillsborough panel was formed to review the evidence and in 2012 found that 116 police statements were amended “to remove or modify adverse comments” to South Yorkshire Police. The panel also found that the police and ambulance services made “relentless attempts to blame innocent fans”.
Previous findings of accidental death have been canceled.
Then, in 2016, the second coroner’s inquest took place and found that the victims were unlawfully killed due to the police and ambulance services’ gross negligence in their duty of care and that supporters were not not to blame for unsafe conditions.
More than a year later, in June 2017, six people have been charged offenses, including manslaughter by gross negligence, misconduct in the exercise of public office and misappropriation of the course of justice for their actions during and after the tragedy. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped all charges against one of the accused.

Following the incident, Anne campaigned to overturn the findings of the coroner’s initial inquest into the accidental death.
