Inside Ncuti Gatwa’s incredible life story, from homelessness to Doctor Who

BBC bosses recently announced actor Ncuti Gatwa as the next Doctor Who.

The 29-year-old is set to succeed current Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker, who will step down as Time Lord later this year.

Posting the news on its official Twitter page on Sunday, May 8, the series announced, “The future is here! Ncuti Gatwa is the doctor,” as fans went wild.

Scottish star Ncuti, who was born in Rwanda, told how delighted he was to take on the role and called it “a unique responsibility”.

“This role and this show means so much to so many people around the world, myself included, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors handled this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care,” he said. at the BBC.

Ncuti and her family moved to Scotland in 1994 and lived in Edinburgh and Dunfermline.

The star then moved to Glasgow to study at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland, and he graduated with a BA in theater in 2013.

He then landed a place in the Dundee Repertory Theater acting diploma program, and he went on to perform in numerous productions including Victoria and the Stonemouth mini-series.

In 2018, Ncuti starred as Eric Effiong in the hit Netflix show Sex Education, with the show’s first series released in 2019.

The role saw the actor rise to fame overnight, and he won a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best TV Actor in 2020, as well as three BAFTA TV Award nominations for Best Male Comedy in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

However, Ncuti previously revealed that before landing the role, he struggled with homelessness and depression.

Writing for The Big Issue in 2020, he told how he ran out of savings and struggled to make ends meet. He wrote: “Being a 25-year-old man with no money or job affected my sense of self-esteem. The rejection became unbearable. The auditions weren’t just acting jobs, they were job lifebuoys. rescue.”

He added: “A friend gave me some money to pay the previous month’s rent and offered to let me move into his spare room for free for a while.

“Awesome, I thought. An opportunity to get back on my feet and start paying people back. On moving day, he changed his mind. As I stood in the street with my suitcases, a thought came to mind: ‘I am homeless.'”

Ncuti went on to explain that he didn’t eat properly at the time because he couldn’t afford it, writing: “To the outside world everything seemed fine. I was acting at Harrods.

“I woke up from the double bed I shared with my best friend, leaving the house without a hair out of place in a sleek trench coat and polished brogues. I was getting compliments for looking so presentable. When I lost weight because I only ate one meal a day, people told me how thin and healthy I looked.”

Around this time, Ncuti had actually developed depression but he hid it from his friends for fear of being a “burden”.

However, the actor’s life changed when he landed the role of Eric in Sex Education, and he has since enjoyed great success.

Sex Education proved to be an instant hit with viewers, and the fourth series is currently in the works.
