Robert Wagner shares his life story in “All My Friends” from Little Wretches (LIVE)

“All of my Friends” is the flagship track by Pennsylvania folk group Little Wretches. The group revolves around the creative spirit of Robert Wagner; resident singer and songwriter. The live interpretation of this song is an intimate performance showcasing the clarity of Wagner’s voice, supported by the not-so-distant violins coming and going in and out of the sonic hearth. The song presents its main purpose from the start. You will find poignant references to friends, from all walks of life, sewn as a common thread throughout the lyrical structure. Although a bit long, you’ll find yourself rewinding lines and catching nuances over and over again as you absorb what Wagner is saying.

Juxtaposition is used everywhere to emphasize the duality of friendship. Moments of despair met with courage. Or the ordinary in balance with the extraordinary. All of this is on a pedestal for the listener.

I think “All my friends” is a life story. We start with the themes of greatness. Nothing but time and energy with nowhere to spend it. We meander through the days, trying to make sense of our circumstances. Some people hurt us, others change us. But in the end, we’re all the same. And that awareness is what brought us together in the first place.

What I love most about this song is that it doesn’t try to be something that it’s not. Much like Wagner’s aforementioned friends, it’s homegrown, it’s PA, it’s pit bulls and poker machines, it’s effortless and endless local. This is what gives it the charm to keep you coming back. My favorite aspect of this project just might be the cover art. Its simplicity is welcome. It’s charm, almost liminal. He’s not trying to be something he’s not. And we thank you.
