After retiring, Phil Collins began drinking heavily to pass the time. At first he didn’t drink all the time as he continued to see his sons, Nicholas and Matthew, as much as possible. But when his ex-wife, Orianne Cevey, decided to move to the United States with her new husband and bring the kids with her in May 2012, Collins took to drinking even more often because he had less. to do and was very sad that her children were drifting away so far.
Reflecting on that horrible time, he said in his memoir: “It took me until I was fifty-five to become an alcoholic. retired, satisfied, and then I fell. Because all of a sudden, I had too much free time. The huge hole, the void left by my children who were taken from me, again, I had to fill it somehow. And I filled it with booze. And it almost killed me. I’m one of the lucky ones.
Collins considered himself lucky as he had nearly died of acute pancreatitis caused by his heavy drinking. Luckily, he was able to get the medical help he needed in time, and the whole horrific event convinced him to quit drinking.
